Visiting Miami University’s Commuter Center

Located in Armstrong Student Center, space offers resources to help commuters with college careers

Commuting to college for some can feel like a more new and scary experience than living on campus. There are a number of questions that can be attached to commuting, such as time management, balancing commitments, and even a bit of social isolation when it comes to the sense of belonging because of the distance from home and campus. Without a dorm to retreat to between classes, finding a place to study, connecting with students, and relaxing can be difficult. Fortunately, Miami University offers a specialized space that is designed for the college commuter: the Commuter Center.

The Commuter Center is located on the second floor of the Armstrong Student Center in room 2045, near the Richard and Emily Smucker Wiikiaami Room. It is more than just a place to sit around; it's a full and eventful space, filled with welcoming and helpful staff, resources to improve your academic career, and plenty of weekly events to participate in.

The Commuter Center is filled with a handful of amenities to make your time on campus more convenient, and of course, comfortable; These amenities include a kitchenette, where you can use the microwave, refrigerator, or freezer, and store all your foods throughout the day; lockers, where you can keep any of your personal items secure, allowing you to keep your items safe without needing to log them between your classes; comfortable entertainment space, where you can take a break with various board games and enjoy some gaming with whatever events they have prepared for that weekend; and a charging station, where you can take advantage of the accessible outlets to charge and manage whatever electrical devices that you have.

The Commuter Center, at its core, is meant to be a convenient space built to support the community around Miami University. Staffed by the student commuter center assistants (CCAs), who act similarly in duties to residential RAs, the lounge is meant to provide a peer-led environment that is connected with others who share similar experiences.

"I think in any situation, like when you feel like you are experiencing something different than the way everyone else is experiencing it, having a space that you know is dedicated to you and that has resources is important," said Hannah Muldoon Davis, the associate director of campus engagement.

The CCAs of the Commuter Center are meant to help, guide, and support you, whether you need assistance navigating any campus resources or are there if you need to talk. The lounge also hosts monthly events, including but not limited to pizza parties, workshops, and tote bag painting. These events are here to help you feel much more involved in student life.

The Commuter Center is open daily from 9 a.m.-7 p.m. However, commuter students can request 24/7 "tap access" by emailing the center to ensure the space is available whenever the Armstrong Student Center is open.
