Annual student fashion show showcases record number of designers
The Miami University Fashion and Design (MUF&D) annual runway show saw a record number of student designers, making the show’s impact bigger than ever.
This year’s theme, Mosaic, showcased 104 outfits crafted by 20 designers and modeled by 87 “icons.”
“Mosaic is a love letter to every person, place, and moment that has shaped our college experiences. Every detail reflects a piece of our stories, and our greatest hope is that everyone watching the show sees a part of themselves in it too,” then MUF&D president Brie Anderson said.
The 19th annual fashion show began with a truck show and opportunities for attendees to buy merchandise from the club and various vendors. Then, the evening moved into a formal runway show.
“Within the hours of work that go into producing one of the nation’s largest student-run fashion shows; designers, directors, models, assistants and members across the organization learn invaluable skills and create both interpersonal and professional relationships,” Audrey Fitzgerald, incoming MUF&D vice president, added.
A total of 21 collaborative collections donned the runway, with each piece designed, crafted, styled, and modeled by Miami students, many of which are studying fashion as a co-major.
Miami currently offers the co-major and a minor in Fashion, but with the success of those programs and the valiant display each year by MUF&D, the program has the potential to expand, according to Ryan Fisher, dean of the College of Creative Arts. He celebrated the success of this year’s show by congratulating the hard work and dedication of the students involved.
“Here’s to a thriving and growing fashion program at Miami,” Fisher said.
Fisher also said he is looking forward to establishing “a strong connection with the fashion community in Columbus and beyond,” going forward.
This fall, MUF&D will introduce a new executive board of students as well as celebrate its 20th year on the runway in the spring. Incoming MUF&D president Sara Rose Detwiler served on the organization’s last executive board and created the Mosaic theme for the show, as well as instrumental digital and physical graphics.
“It was a great experience in which I applied my skills under my Strategic Communication major with my Digital Marketing and Communication Design minors,” Detwiler said. “This year, as president, I'm excited to amplify my creative and professional experience with my executive board for the 20th Annual Fashion Show.”
“It's more than just an organization, we’re making a statement,” Fitzgerald said.
