Resources to support those affected by violence in the Middle East

This message was sent to all Miami University students October 12, in the Weekly Three from the Division of Student Life.

We want to take a moment to acknowledge the very real feelings of pain, hurt, and concern within our Miami community. On Saturday, Hamas staged a brutal and violent terrorist attack on communities in Israel, and thousands of civilians in Israel and the Gaza Strip have died in the days since that attack. As we shared in a Miami community message yesterday, our goal is to provide care and support for all of our students. We stand together as one community, listening and making space for each other, including across differences in challenging times.

We are here to support our Jewish students. We are here to support our Arab and Middle Eastern students. We recognize that many of our students have a direct connection to, and family and friends in, the affected region. We support and care about all of our students. We ask you to see and remember the humanity in each other, and strive to treat each other with dignity and respect as fellow Miamians.

This message was sent to all Miami University students, faculty, and staff October 11.

Dear Miami University Community,

As we continue to learn more about the violent attack on Israel this weekend and the escalating conflict impacting so many in the region, we wish to provide support to all impacted by the ongoing violence and to the many of you who are grieving. The news and imagery of such destruction and death is distressing and heart wrenching.

At Miami, we condemn terrorism and denounce violence and hate in all forms.

We know many in our community may have been affected, directly or indirectly, by this violence and loss of life, and we don’t know what the coming weeks will bring. We encourage all members of our community to support one another and extend grace and understanding as individuals process these tragic events.

Also, we want to underscore the importance of taking care of yourself and seeking support if needed. University resources are available for anyone feeling threatened or uneasy during these volatile times.

Students: Support resources are available through Student Counseling Service, including the 24/7 H.O.P.E. Line, as well as through the Office of the Dean of Students, the Center for Student Diversity and Inclusion, and International Student and Scholar Services.

Faculty and Staff: Support resources are available through the Employee Assistance Program, as well as through International Student and Scholar Services.

Sincerely,

Gregory P. Crawford, President

Elizabeth Reitz Mullenix , Provost and Executive Vice President

Dr. Jayne Brownell, Senior Vice President for Student Life

Dr. M. Cristina Alcalde, Vice President for Institutional Diversity and Inclusion
