Miami’s Evan Danielson and Zoe Platow named Goldwater Scholars
Danielson and Platow are among the 417 students nationwide to receive the prestigious scholarship.
Miami University students Evan Danielson and Zoe Platow have each received a Goldwater Scholarship for 2022-2023. They are among 417 students nationwide to receive the scholarship, the premier undergraduate award for students intending a research career in mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering.
Danielson is a double major in chemical engineering and music performance. He has been involved in undergraduate research since 2019 with faculty mentors Jason Berberich and Jason Boock, associate and assistant professors, respectively, of Chemical, Paper and Bioengineering. Platow is a double major in biochemistry and psychology and has been involved in undergraduate research since 2020 with Matthew McMurray, assistant professor of Psychology.
"This is an amazing outcome for the students and for Miami University,” said Paul Urayama, chair and associate professor of Physics, and member of the university's National Fellowships Committee. “This highlights Miami students' deep involvement with research along with the faculty's commitment to student mentoring. I am so proud of what our nominees have accomplished.”
This marks the 11th year in a row that Miami students were awarded Goldwater scholarships; since 2012, 18 Miami students have earned these scholarships.
The Goldwater Scholarship Program encourages, identifies, and supports students who show exceptional promise of becoming the next generation of research leaders in the fields of mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering. Nationwide, faculty nominated 1,242 students — from a pool of more than 5,000 — for the scholarship, worth up to $7,500 per year. This year, Danielson and Platow are among 12 students from Ohio institutions selected for the scholarships. They are two out of seven Goldwater Scholars among Ohio public universities.
As a result of an ongoing partnership with the Department of Defense National Defense Education Programs, the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation was again able to increase the number of Goldwater scholarships for the 2022-2023 academic year.
“The Department of Defense’s continued partnership with the Goldwater Foundation ensures we are supporting the development of scientific talent essential to maintaining our nation’s competitive advantage,” said Jagadeesh Pamulapati, acting deputy director of research, technology, and laboratories, who oversees the Department of Defense’s education program.
