Call for nominations: The Inaugural Student Sustainability Leadership Awards

Call for nominations: The Inaugural Student Sustainability Leadership Awards

The Miami University Climate Action Task Force (CATF) Student subcommittee announces a call for nominations for the inaugural Student Sustainability Leadership Awards. Nominations are due March 14.

The Miami University Student Sustainability Awards recognize outstanding commitment by students and student organizations to enhance sustainability at Miami.

The awards aim to recognize and celebrate the work of individual students and student organizations toward a campus that is socially, economically, and environmentally sustainable for generations to come.

Winners will be announced at the Student Engagement and Leadership (SEAL) Awards ceremony April 27.

These leadership achievements may be in the areas of academic work, climate, advisement, collaboration, mentoring, outreach, research, and/or creative activity.

Nominations may be made in three categories:

  • Social Sustainability:In areas such as social equity, health equity, community development, social support, human rights, social responsibility, and social justice.
  • Economic Sustainability: In areas such as reducing carbon footprint, use of solar energy, air or water innovations, and sustainable farming.
  • Environmental Sustainability: In areas such as the use of renewable energy, recycling, and the preservation of natural resources.

Nominations are based on leadership that has been demonstrated in two or more of the following categories: 

  • Innovative and progressive practices that support social, economic, and/or environmental sustainability.
  • Raising awareness and generating enthusiasm surrounding sustainability issues.
  • Initiatives or efforts that make the campus more sustainable.
  • Collaborative programs or events that bring together sustainability stakeholders in the region.

Winners will be selected by the Climate Action Task Force Student Subcommittee 

  • Scott Walter, assistant vice president for Student Life, CATF chair for Campus/Student Engagement 
  • Denali Selent, CATF Student representative, junior general engineering major and environmental science co-major
  • Lauren Doepke,  Sustainability coordinator; Environmental Earth Science major and Environmental Studies co-major in the combined Master of Environmental Science program, and a Hannon Armstrong Climate Solutions scholar
  • Hila Eitam, Biology and Public Administration double major
  • Michelle Engel, Biology and Environmental Science co-major
  • David Gudin, Environmental Earth Science and Environmental Science co-major; founder of the Green Gamers student club
  • Kelsey Norris, Political Science major and Latin American Studies minor
  • Evelyn Morrison, Public Administration and Data Analytics double major, sustainability co-major
