Trustees approve new degree programs, fee increase for student mental health support

Miami University Board of Trustees wrapped up its last meeting of 2021 on Friday, Dec. 10, with the approval of new academic programs and a fee increase for student mental health support.

Trustees approved establishing a major in Biomedical Science and Master of Medical Science within the College of Arts and Science and a major in Sports Leadership and Management and a Master of Sports Analytics within the College of Education, Health and Society.

Trustees approved fee ordinances in the following areas:

  • The Farmer School of Business program fee will increase from $110 to $125 per credit hour. The fee will apply to first-time students beginning in 2022-23 academic year. Business program fees haven’t increased since the fall of 2016.
  • A new mental health fee of $50 per semester for students taking 12 or more credit hours will be applied in fall 2022 to first-time students. These resources will be allocated to increase Miami’s mental health support services for students.

The proposed fee increases are subject to the approval of the Chancellor of Higher Education.

Trustees approved Miami’s 2023-28 Capital Improvement Plan and Funding request. The Capital Plan is expected to be introduced in the Ohio General Assembly early in the new calendar year.

Trustees authorized the renovation of the Elm Street building that will be used for College@Elm, a dedicated facility for students to gain real-world experience around business startups and small-scale manufacturing. Funding was also approved for a central campus hot water conversion project that will build upon the university’s sustainability commitment and goals.

Trustees also:

  • Approved the awarding of Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degrees at its Fall Commencement to Nichole Mustard (Miami ‘95), co-founder and chief revenue officer of Credit Karma; Chief Doug Lankford of the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma; Richard Forsythe (Miami ‘61), entrepreneur and founder of Forsythe McArthur Associates; and Sylvia Stanfield, a retired U.S. Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam and a Western College for Women alumna.
  • Approved general counsel emerita status for Robin Parker, Miami’s first General Counsel, who is retiring after 27 years of service to the university.
  • Announced new board officer appointments.
  • Accepted the Committee for Naming Campus Facilities recommendation for the naming of Dr. Sara and Mr. Brent Arter Debriefing and Conference Room and the Mary Jean Cohen Student Study Area in University Hall on the Hamilton campus.
