Semester / Full Year Program participants at the MU Dolibois European Campus in Luxembourg enjoy an outstanding education about Europe while immersing themselves in the rich Picnic at Chateaudiversity of cultures that characterize modern Luxembourg and Europe. Due to our excellent location, it’s easy for students to explore much of Europe: the countries they are studying in class and others, typically 12-14 countries in a semester. All students live with local host families, ensuring that they have an inside view of the charming culture. Our program is practical and affordable! Find out about our excellent scholarships! Dr. Emile Haag Alumni Scholarship

Professor Emile HaagAnnouncing the establishment of the scholarship n honor of Dr. Haag's continuing 40 years of service to the Miami University Dolibois European Center (MUDEC).

Were you inspired and enlightened by Dr. Haag's masterful storytelling and his passion for teaching? Did one of his panel discussions or field trips change your perspective of history?

After 40 years, during which more than 7,000 Miami University students have enjoyed a semester or two in Luxembourg, it is time to honor Dr. Haag for his remarkable commitment and service to MUDEC. It is time to ensure that his story and storytelling remain a permanent part of the MUDEC experience.

What better way to honor this legacy than by ensuring future Miami students are able to grow from the same MUDEC experience we enjoyed? We are creating - with your help - a scholarship in Dr. Haag's name that will be directed toward economically disadvantaged students who are otherwise unable to participate in this remarkable program. We have personally committed $25,000 to start the endowment for this incredible scholarship.

To this end, we are asking you to go online, visit the Dr. Emile Haag Alumni Scholarship, and make a donation (if you would like to pay in installments over a five year period contact Michael Kumler).

With your help, we can recognize Dr. Haag this October, when many of us gather in Luxembourg for MUDEC's 40th Anniversary. It is our hope to provide a fully-endowed scholarship worthy of his 40 years, and counting, of incomparable service.

image of the sunSummer Program participants of the Dolibois European Campus spend 7 weeks studying Europe from a variety of perspectives, exploring the European countries they are focusing onMU European Campus emblem (and others), and living with local host families in Luxembourg. The Summer Program was designed for students whose majors make it difficult to study abroad for a semester. It’s practical: You take 3 courses which are a Thematic Sequence. This new program includes as many aspects of the renowned Semester/Year Program as possible, including the week-long field study tour that is a highlight for students and faculty alike.

Community Outreach in Luxembourg:

This summer, as part of the Centennial celebration of the city of Differdange (where MUDEC is located), our château became the backdrop for a medieval play based on Everyman.

It was the highlight of the festivities for the city:  all week, the performances were sold out.

Dr. Tomarken and his wife, Dr. Annette Tomarken, are returning to MUDEC for Spring 2008 and the 2008-2009 academic year: “Annette and I are looking forward to returning to MUDEC because the Campus offers a unique educational opportunity to combine academic and experiential learning and because of the warm collegial atmosphere among staff and faculty.”

Associate Professor, Department of Geology
Chair of the MUDEC Subcommittee of the International Education Committee

I was a base-course professor at MUDEC during academic years 2002-2003 and 2003-2004 teaching courses on Europe and the Environment, European water issues and Environmental Geology with a European slant.  Since returning to Oxford, I have been Chair of the MUDEC Subcommittee of the International Education Committee.  This subcommittee is advisory to the Provost and the Dean of MUDEC, dealing mainly with curricular issues.  Its principal duty it to review and recommend appointments of Ohio-based faculty to MUDEC for visiting professors, base-courses professors and professors for the new MUDEC summer program, in all, seven to ten appointments per year.
I serve as chair of the subcommittee, not because of any particular European expertise, but because I am such a big fan of the MUDEC programs.  I feel MUDEC is a gem for Miami.  Living and teaching in Luxembourg was a great experience for me and my family (my spouse and two children, ages 3 and 5 when we moved to Differdange).  The MUDEC students are energized and engaged.  The sharing of time, space, meals and experience with the students allows a MUDEC professor to develop strong relationships with the students.  The study tours, which are now a part of both base-courses and visiting-professor courses, represent an invaluable contribution both to the academic experience and to enhancing the relations between students and between students and the professor.  I consider my time at MUDEC to be the most rewarding teaching I have been part of in my 13.5 years at Miami.

Maggie Duvall, '07-08, Communication major: "Deciding to spend a semester at MUDEC was perhaps the best decision I have made in my college career. It was a wonderful opportunity to gain European perspective and support by living with a host family and the bond formed between MUDEC students is one of a kind. In addition, taking history classes from teachers with incredible credentials about topics that directly applied to my weekend travels was extremely enriching academically. This unique international experience challenged me to grow as a person in ways I never thought possible, providing me with a new sense of independence and perspective, which will no doubt carry with me into my professional life.”

Field Study Tour Insights

Deanna CozziDeanna Cozzi, '05-06, Exercise Science major, "One of my favorite weeks of the semester was the Field Study Tour.  It was so neat to take what we have learned in class and see how it applies to everyday life in a different country.  To have different cities be your classroom for a week is a pretty great way to learn and really opens your eyes to different customs around the world."

Katelyn Turlington, '07-08, majoring in International Studies and Strategic Communication: "I was fortunate to spend my childhood overseas among different languages and cultures; however my semester at MUDEC enabled me to truly take my international experience and education into my own hands.  It was thrilling to study the rise of Hitler and the future of contemporary Europe in the heart of the European Union and to visit the very places highlighted in our textbooks and classroom discussions.  The close relationships between students and professors and the camaraderie fostered at MUDEC provided a unique educational experience and as a student in Luxembourg I faced the exciting challenge of living in a tri-lingual city and calling a wonderful German couple my 'family'.  My semester in Luxembourg was an incredibly rewarding and enriching experience that will continue to serve me in life beyond Miami."
