What is Conservation Biology?

Conservation Biology in its simplest form is "the application of biology to the care and protection of plants and animals to prevent their loss or waste." It is a cross-curricular discipline encompassing biology, physical science, and social sciences as well as mathematics and history. As an applied science, Conservation Biology is concerned with maintaining the Earth's biological diversity through research and action both scientific and social.

What are its origins?

Conservation Biology is a relatively new field of inquiry. In 1978, the First International Conference on Conservation Biology was held in San Diego, California. The first text, written by Michael Soule and Bruce Wilcox ,Conservation Biology, was published in 1980. The Society for Conservation Biology was formed in 1987, and is responsible for publishing a bi-monthly journal Conservation Biology.
