Message from the dean:

The impressive faculty and student accomplishments highlighted in this newsletter nicely illustrate some of the themes being discussed in our divisional strategic planning sessions. Repeatedly, I've heard faculty members talk about excellence in scholarship and teaching and how the School could and should make even more of a difference in students' lives.

So when you look at this issue, consider how some of these goals are already playing out in EAP. And what might be accomplished in the future.

When I read about Amanda McMullen, the first in her family to go to college, I am proud and grateful that so many alumni and friends believe in the School of Education and Allied Professions and generously offer support for our students and programs.

Finally, I do hope many of you will return to Miami Saturday, April 21, for the rededication of McGuffey and Phillips Halls. For more information, go to our rededication site.

Warm regards and Happy Valentine's Day,

Carine M. Feyten, Ph.D.
Dean and Professor of Foreign Language Education

Scholarships change lives. If you ever doubted that, read about Amanda McMullen, a Miami junior who is earning a 4.0 GPA while double majoring in math education and mathematics and statistics. The first member of her family to go to college, Amanda hopes to return to her hometown of Waverly in southeastern Ohio and teach mathematics at the college or community college level.

Anyone who's raised a teenager (or been around one) can understand the importance of increasing our understanding of adolescent development. That's been the research focus of Gary (Pete) Peterson, chair and professor of family studies and social work. He's recently been named a National Council on Family Relations Fellow in recognition of his outstanding scholarly achievements and leadership on family issues.

A children's picture book database project by Professor Valerie A. Ubbes of the physical education, health and sport studies department has been named as one of "101 Best Web sites for Elementary Teachers," but it's also a hit with the public. Thousands of users log into it weekly and if you "google" the site, 25,000 links come up, including resource lists maintained by universities, schools, libraries, national literacy organizations and organizations catering to parents.

Educational psychology students working with administrators are adding disability information to campus doors and in the process making Miami more welcoming to the disabled. The project is an example of the type of innovative, collaborative learning preferred by Professor Kathy McMahon-Klosterman of the educational psychology department, who recently earned Miami's most prestigious teaching honor, the E. Phillips Knox Teaching Award.

Students in a large majority of community schools are performing at a level "unequivocally below" the performance of those in traditional public schools, an EAP study shows.

We are a collegial community of learners, specifically focused on the development of leaders for education, families, health and social service agencies, and local communities. We are stewards of our public responsibility to create knowledge and strategies to improve our complex global society. We strive to be exemplars of practices that are democratic, nurturing, and responsive to diverse learners and contexts.
